Check out what's happening in your backyard

Auckland is your backyard: the city where you live, work or play. The thing is, the isthmus and city centre is growing, so we have to plan now to determine how we can make the best use of land in the future.

This website paints a picture of how the Auckland isthmus could develop through area plans under the future planning framework. You'll learn how Auckland City Council suggests we deal with important issues facing Auckland, including:

  • How and where growth and development should occur
  • Respecting the historic urban landscape
  • Preserving our natural environment
  • Developing high quality urban areas
  • Retaining our unique character and identity.

The draft future planning framework was shared with communities and stakeholders over a seven-week period from mid March to mid May 2009. Nearly 800 feedback responses were received, offering 1753 comments on aspects of the future planning framework. A number of key themes emerged from the feedback and these are outlined below.

Following submissions from the community on four precinct plans, minor changes have been made to the maps and plans and modified versions appear in the Future Planning Framework version 3.0.

The future planning framework project received the New Zealand Planning Institute's top planning award for excellence in 2010.
